Volcano Words

Acid Rain

Acid rain is when volcanic ash lets out gas into the air and gasses from the volcano spray into the sky causing rain, snow, or, sleet to fall with volcanic acid's.

Lava Flows

Lava flows are streams of rock that pour from an erupting vent. Lava flow destroys everything in its path. But they move slowly enough that people can move out of the way.

Volcanic Ash

Volcanic ash has tin jagged pieces of rock and glass. Volcanic ash was exploded from a vent.

Pyroclastic Flows

Pyroclastic flows are flows of mud that falls off the side of the volcano. They can knock down or burn anything in their path. They usually follow valleys and if they move quick enough they can go up hills. They are extremely dangerous.

"The pyroclastic flow destroyed the entire city."

Scientific Method Words

Graphing Words

Y- Axis

The y- axis is nomally labeled on the vertical axis. The y-axis sometimes is used to represent the dependent variable, which responds to the independent variable also is what your measuring during a lab. Another place the y-axis is used in is in mathmatics when graphing equations.

X- Axis

Another axis used in graphs is the x- axis. The x- axis is also used in mathmatics but instead of being labeled on the vertical axis it's labeled on the horizontol axis. It's used to represent the independent variable is the idea your hoping to test.

Lithosphere Words

Sediment

Sediment is soil and debris that is picked up when water is forced into a river. This causes pollution in rivers. If it is an urban flood, then the flood will pick up fertilizer, pollutants, dirt, mulch, and other harmful things. Then when this sediment is finally dumped into a river, anything the flood picked up on the way to the river is now in the river. If harmful things are in floods, then the river will become polluted. This is a danger of sediment that I always worry about. Sediment is then deposited into riverbeds, making fertile land for farming.

"After a flood I saw that sediment was everywhere in my house."

"After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, sediment was deposited everywhere."

Deposition

Deposition is when debris and sediment are left behind in a lowland area after a flood. After a flood, deposition can destroy people's houses and makes a big mess. Deposition is good because the sediment left behind helps to make the soil richer, which helps farming.

"Deposition covered my skateboard, and now it's gone forever!"

"During the flood lots of Deposition covered my clothes."

Energy Words

Energy

Energy is the ability to do work or cause change.

"My energy level slowly started to drop."

Potential Energy

Potential energy is enery stored up or the potential to work or cause change.

"An example of potential energy is someone about to throw a ball."

Kinetic Energy

Kinetic energy is energy that is doing work or causing change. It is also energy that is in motion.

"Someone running" is an example of kinetic energy.

Mechanical Energy

Mechanical energy is energy that you can physically see happening.

"Someone jumping" is an example of mechanical energy.

Sound Energy

Sound energy is energy that comes from sounds

"Playing the Saxaphone" is an example of sound energy.
