Middle Ages Analogies

Use this page to record the analogies that you've created for important Middle Ages terms like The Crusades, Monarchy, 95 Theses, Magna Carta, Serfs, Feudalism and King John Make sure you start your entry with the phrase ______________ is like a ___________________ in Heading 3 font.  Here's a sample:

King John is like a pencil

I think King John of England is like a pencil because whenever he would take an army to war he was always defeated, but he would always return to take up a new army of men. Soon the armies got smaller and smaller until he didn't have an army because  people refused. This conects with a pencil because whenever you write with a pencil, the pencil gets dull so you have to sharpen it again making the pencil shorter, similar to King John and his shrinking armies.  Another strength is that a pencil point can break.  This is similar to when King John's armies were defeated in wars. Then after a while the pencils is too small to use and becomes worthless and King John 's rule will become useless too.

A weakness is that the king was not ruled by anyone but the pencil is ruled by the writer.  Another weakness is that a pencil has an eraser that allows you to undo whatever you've done, but King John couldn't undo all of his wars. Also whe you re-sharpen your pencil it becomes better, smaller but better to write with.

Martin Luther is like a library

Martin Luther is like a library because he gives lots of information to the people of his time. He posted a list of 95 criticisms like a library  posts up new information on a bulletin board. The non-fiction books tell the truth like Martin Luther did. Then the fiction books are like the Catholic Church because they made up things about the Bible and don't tell the absolute truth. Martin Luther got burned at the stake like a library would go out of business and get demolished. I think Martin Luther would be a non-fiction book because he told nothing but the truth. He is also like a library because he was a peaceful man despite what he has been throgh. Like a library is also supposed to be peaceful. The catholic church is almost the complete opposite of Martin Luther. Martin Luther's death was tragic, like a book being ripped appart to shreds.

Feudalism is likea family

Feudalism is like a family because the different stages to them both. A father of a family would be like a king and the mother of a family would be like a queen.  Then the knights might be considered the college kid or the older brother/sister of the family, below the parents. Then kids can be like serfs because they do some work around the house in the form of chores.

One weakness of this analogy is that the queen doesn't do work for the serfs, but in a family, mothers do lots of work for their children.  Another weakness is that the king usually sits around in the middle ages, but fathers often have jobs and work for their families.  Finally, fathers do many nice things for their children, but kings wouldn't do those things for serfs (such as tax them).

King John is like a new born horse

King John is like a new born horse because King John always wanted wars even though he always lost. Just like a new born horse tries to stand up, but always falls. A new born horse is very difficult to handle, like King John is very difficult to deal with. Also a new born horse will be able to stand on his own, like when King John turned his attitude around and tried to compromise with the church.

A weakness of this analogy is that King John was mean spirited and a new born horse is not. Another weakness is most people liked horses but nobody liked King John. One more weakness is King John had lots of power and a baby horse has none.

Feudalism is like the food chain

Feudalism is like the food chain because of it's many levels of power. At the top of the food chain are humans and we would relate to the kings. Next in the food chain could be sharks and the sharks would relate to the lords. Then the large fish would come after the sharks. The large fish would relate to the kings. Below the large fish would be the smaller fish that would be related to the knights. After the smaller fish would come the lowest part in the food chain which would be the plants. The plants would relate to the lowest form of power in  feudalism which is the serfs.

A weakness that this analogy is that people eat a lot of different types of foods. But feudalism can't go in different ways like the food chain can.

Monarchs are like a battery

Monarchs are like a battery because batteries are what keep gadgets operable. Like a battery, a monarch is the one who helps the kingdom. Another strength of this analogy is that batteries can be replaced to keep a gadget working. Similarly, a monarch can be replaced for the kingdom to continue. Also, a monarch can be good or bad just like a battery can.  Also, a monarch can make a difference on how the empire works, just like a battery influences how good a device works.  If you have a weak battery, the device doesn't work well.  If you have a strong battery, it does.

A weakness is that without a battery, a device cannot be operated at all. Whereas, it's possible for a kingdom to continue functioning without a monarch.  Another weakness is that you can make rechargeable batteries better, but you can't make a bad king better.

Feudalism is like a school

Feudalism is like a school because it has groups just like feudalism. The principal is like the king because he is the boss of the school just like the king is to the land. Assistant principal is like the lord because he does not rule completely but they are the second power than the king. The teacher's is like the knights, and the students are like the serfs because we have no choice what we do and we are controlled buy everyone else.

The Catholic Church is like the Slot Machines

The Catholic Church is like slot machines because slot machines are rip offs and so was the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church would tell people to pay them money to buy a "get out of sin free card." People would pay whatever the church wanted and they thought they wouldn't go to hell. Slot machines waste your money also.  They make you spend money to play a game that you probably wont win any money than what you paid for the game. Some weaknesses is that slot machines don't give you "get out of sin free cards."

The Catholic Church is like an exclusive mens' club.  Only men can be priests.  Only men are Popes, bishops and high up in the clergy.  The "club" has it's own country inside Rome too.  To get into the club you had to have connections to royalty.  The Catholic Church is the oldest Christian Religion, so it is closer to Jesus you would think, but the mass was in Latin and only men could study latin and no one knew what was going on, and no one could read the Bible so they had to do what the priest said because they didn't know what it said in the bible.  So it was not really for everyone to participate. (Patrick Ferris, Catholic).

95 thesis is like a comedian

I think this because the 95 thesis has 95 complaints and I think that's like bias because he only says one side of the story. So do comedians they try to tell you the funniest side to make people laugh. One difference is that the 95 thesis only happened once, but a comedian tells jokes over and over. Another difference  is that a comedian tells his jokes to be kind of famous. But Luther did it to tell his opinion.

The 95 thesis are like a 3 year old

The 95 thesis are like a three year old because they are stubborn. For instance Martin Luther had a list of complaints about the Catholic Church. Three year olds have a whole lot of complaints for things like eating vegetables, or taking baths. Since the three year olds don't like to eat vegetables or other foods they dont like... they are taking a stand. Same with Luther. He was upset about the Catholic Church and desided he was going to take a stand. They would both have penalties. For example the child would get disciplined by not having desert, or something taken away like a toy or something. And Luther would have a more harsh penalty such getting burned at the stake.

One weakness of this analogy is that the three year old would not have written all of the complaints down and nailed it to a door, he or she would just scream it out loud so everyone could hear. But Martin Luther wrote them down and nailed them to the door of the Catholic Church.

Martin Luther is like Medicine

Martin Luther is like medicine because medcine fights until it kills the germ. Also because when medicine finnaly kills the germ, that is like Martin Luther defeating the king. Another strength is that medicine will stop fighting once it kills the germs so it won't cause any complications, and Martin Luther Stopped once he won.

A weakness of this analogy is that not all medicine could kill the germ, some "loose" and don't kill the germ. One more weakness is that some medicine kills germs very fast which is bad because Martin Luther couldn't win right away like medicine.

Serfs are like super mario

There like this because the serfs are conrolled by someone higher rank then they are and super mario is conrolled by a human.

A weakness is that you tell mario how to do every thing but you can't tell a serf to do any thing like tell them where to move.
