About St.Petersburg

Saint Petersburg is a city in Russia and once was the capital for about 200 years. It is on the Gulf of Finland which is on the Baltic Sea and is known as the "Window of Europe" because of its position on the Baltic Sea. It is Russia's 2nd largest city and Europe's 8th largest city. It was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703 and he named it Saint Petersburg after the apostle, St.Peter. It has been a center for Russia's politics for 200 years know. There population is about 4.7 million since 2002. The cities area is 1439 sq km. St.Petersburg is sometimes referred to a "the northern capital" or its nickname, Piter. St. Petersburg is connected to Russia because it once was Russia's capital. It was the capital because it was on a very important port in Russia. It is still know a city in Russia but not the capital. The capital now is Moscow a couple miles away from St. Petersburg.

Economy

Saint Petersburg is a major center in Russia for machine building (shipyards, power equipment, ect). They also have the most important port on the Baltic Sea which is located near Russia's west border to the north and has a population of over one million people. Another main product they produce is badges, medals, and Russian coins. They are the only place in Russia that produces these things because they are the only ones who have mints.

History

The city of St.Petersburg was founded in May 27, 1703 by Tsar Peter. He named it after his patron saint, Saint Peter. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Bolsheviks over through the Tsar which was at that time, Nicholas II. Since they wanted the capital closer to where they were in Russia, they moved it from St.Petersburg to Moscow.

Culture

In St.Petersburg, they are known for their high quality culture. They have also been Russia's center of culture for 200 years know. One thing in culture they are famous for are their theaters. The theaters there are used for ballet and opera performances. A popular theater there is the Kirov Theater (know known as the Mariinsky Theater). Another big part of their culture is movies. Some of their movies have become international. A lot of their movies have been based on famous literary works (poems, novels, fictional teachings). And last, they are popular for their music. They have created their own type called "Piters Rock" and have created some of the newest modern music types. One of their most famous orchestras there is, the St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, which is really big there.

Tourist Attractions & Landmarks

One thing St.Petersburg is famous for when it comes to tourist attractions is their bridges. They are even known for being the city of 300 bridges. They have so many bridges because the city is crossed with a lot of rivers, creeks, canals and other bodies of water. The main waterway for these is the Neva River. The first bridge that crossed the Neva was built during the 19th century. The bridges in St.Petersburg have lots of different names such as names of famous people or names in different languages. Today, they have 342 bridges.

Another beautiful attraction is the big palaces. Most of the palaces there were built a long time ago but are still standing. One famous palace is the "Summer Palace" and was built for Peter I which he lived in it from 1710-1714. Another famous palace is the "Winter Palace". It now is a museum. A lot of the palaces have been changed into children’s places or like the "Winter Palace", museums. The last type of tourist attraction is the beautiful churches. Most of the churches are owned by the government and have been since 1917. The biggest church in the city is St.Isaac's Cathedral. Some of the churches today operate as museums.

I think that there coul be more pictures and your bubble share was weird it had alot of pictures of a girl smileing for the camera. I think you siad more than once that St. Petersburg used to be there capital, that kind of got you off topic. I think you could have added a little more links than you did, and the links you had mostley went to wikipedia. I think your paragraphs were goofy because some looked like they were more spaced out than others.

I really think that your wiki is awsome because it has lots of information as well as good formating(except for the spacing between the paragraphs). I am wondering though why you have clocks up for one of the "Bubble shares". I think that would look much better if there was a paragraph or something to go along with the clock otherwise it really isn't needed. Over all though, I'd give this page a three because I didn't see many spelling or grammar errorsbut I'd like to see more links.

Your page would probably get an average score in my opinion because, your title is below the pictures, the picutes and bubbleshares are useless. Some grammer/spelling mistakes and lots of links go to wikipedia. You had good content but it gets boring with out some visual to look at.

Why are you editing the page right now??? You shouldn't be.

Shouldn't the title be at the top? If you stagerred the artzy stuff, it would probabl get a better grade.

Hey Guys,

I think that you've got some great content on your page that taught me lots of new things about St. Petersburg. That was cool. From the page history, it seems as if most of this content was posted by only one of your group mates.

The formatting of the page was solid as well. I liked the subtitles that you chose to include. I do agree with Liz, though, that if you had staggered your pictures and plugins that your page would be more visually appealing.
