Earth Analogies

This page, you will record your "The Earth is like a...." thinking. Those are called analogies because you're comparing one thing to another. Be sure to detail the strengths of your model and the limitations of your model. If you are reading someone else's model and you can think of additional strengths or limitations, be sure to add them!

Also, always be on the lookout for spelling, grammar or punctuation that you can correct. Start with the phrase "The Earth is Like A" in Heading Two font. Then write your description in Normal. Here's an example:

The Earth is like a Junior Mint

The Earth is a Junior Mint because it has layers like the Earth. The harder outer part is like the crust of the Earth. The soft chocolatey part is like the mantle. And the white minty part is like the core.

The Earth is Like a Garlic Cloveexternal image juniorm.jpg

The earth is like a garlic clove because it has layers just like the earth. There is the fragile covering of the garlic bulb that is like the lithosphere and the asthenosphere of the earth. The fragile covering is like the crust and the lithosphere because they are both on the outside. There is the garlic bulb that could be the mantle because it's the thickest layer of the earth. Then there's the stem that is like the outer core and the inner core. Another strength to the model is that the crust is split into different pieces. A weakness to this model is that it only has one part of the crust and the earth has two parts to the crust. Another weakness to the model is that it only has one part to the core and the earth has two layers.

The Earth is Like a Baseball

The earth is like a baseball because it has layers like the earth does. The leather part of the baseball is like the lithosphere because it is the thinnest and the outermost layer. The rubber right under the leather is like the asthenosphere because it is thin, soft and is just above the mantle. The white string of the baseball is like the mantle because it's the thickest layer. The orange and black part of the baseball is like the outer core because it is right between the mantle and the inner core. The last part of the baseball is the center brown part of the baseball which is the inner core because it is solid. A strength is that the crust of the earth is in different parts, just like the baseball. One weakness is that the outer core has two layers in the baseball and there is really just one layer on the earth. Also, the outer core of the earth is liquid and it is not on the baseball. Another weakness is that there are not enough plates on the baseball and the plates on the baseball are the same shape. The earth has seven to ten plates of all different shapes and sizes. The Earth is Like a Peanut M&M

The earth is like a peanut M&M because it has layers like the earth. The candy shell of the M&M is like the crust of the earth because it is the thinnest. The chocolate part of the M&M is like the mantle because it is the thickest. The peanut part of the M&M is like the two parts of the core. This model does have a few weaknesses. A peanut M&M is shaped like an oval and the earth is round. Also the peanut is a little too big to represent the core because the core is one of the smallest layers. Another is that the crust is not split into different parts and that the crust is only one layer, and the earth has two layers.

The Earth is Like a Corn Dog

The Earth is like a corn dog because a corn dog has layers. There is the bread part, the hot dog part, and the stick. The Earth has layers too. Another similarity is that the center of the Earth is the most dense. The stick of the corn dog, which would represent the core, is more dense than the hot dog or the bread. A weakness of this model is that the "crust," which would be the bread, is the thickest layer of the corn dog. In the earth, the mantle is the thickest layer. Another weakness is that it only has two layers. One more weakness is that it is definately the wrong shape.

The Earth is Like an Avocado

The Earth is like an avocado because both of the objects have different layers. The skin of the avacodo represents the crust of the Earth .The mantle is like the "meat" of the avacodo. Plus, the seed is just like the core of the Earth. Last, each of the layers are about the same in thickness except the seed of the Avacado is bigger than the core of the earth. The skin or crust is the thinnest layer, the mantle and edible vegetable are the thickest layers, and the core and seed is the center part of each object. There are a few limitations in this model of the Earth. The Earth is more round while the avacodo is more like the shape of an oval. Plus, the seed isn't located comepletely in the center but the core is. Finally, the seed isn't one solid ball like the core of the Earth. One more limitation is that it isn't as big as the earth. Another limitation to this model is that it doesn't have as many layers as the earth.

The Earth is like an Orange

The Earth is like an orange because both objects have many different layers. The orange and the Earth both have a core-like center, but oranges don't have an outer core like the Earth does. Of course, the orange's core isn't circular. The largest layer in the Earth is the mantle. The orange's largest layer is like the mantle too, where all the juice and seeds are located. The mantle in the earth is a liquid, but the oranges mantle is mostly solid. The orange's skin is like the crust becuase it is the thinnest layer. Under the surface of the orange's skin, you'll often find a thinner layer of skin. It is usually waxy and white. This reminds us of the earth's asthenosphere, which is a thin layer between the crust and the mantle. On top of the orange's skin you can see little bumps. The bumps reminded me of mountains on the earth.
A picture of an orange:

The Earth is Like a Pencil

The Earth is like a pencil because, the pencil has layers just like the earth. Also because the lead in the pencil is like the core in the Earth. The largest layer in the Earth is the mantle, and the wood in the pencil is just like the mantle. Some of the limitations are that a pencil isn't round like the earth. Also, the pencil does not have a lot of layers like the Earth does. It doesn't have the outer core like the Earth does, which is another limitation of the pencil.

The Earth is Like a Cherry

The Earth is like a cherry because the skin is like the Earth's crust. After the crust, the juice is like the mantle. The core is like the pit, because it is small and is the densest part of the cherry. The cherry's shape is round, so it is like the earths shape. Some weaknesses of the cherry is that the shape is a little off. It has a stem on the end unlike the earth. It is red, also. In the cherry, the mantle and the outer core are together.

The Earth is Like a Banana

The Earth is like a banana because the gray layer in the middle is like the outer and inner core. The peel is thick, so some of it is the asthenosphere and some is the lithosphere. The rest of the banana would be the mantle because it is the thickest and the softest. The limitations are that the banana isn't round and the Earth is not soft. Also the banana dose not have as much layers as the earth.

The Earth is Like a Kiwi

The Earth is like a kiwi fruit because it has layers like the Earth. The skin is like the crust because they are both the thinnest layers of the object. The green flesh of the kiwi fruit is like the mantle of the Earth because they both are the deepest and squishiest layers. The seeds are kind of like the outer core because it surrounds the inner core. Finally, the white part of the kiwi fruit is like the inner core because they are both the of all the densest layers. Some of the limitations of the kiwi fruit is that it is not in a sphere like the Earth. Another weakness is that it does not have all the layers.
A picture of a kiwi:

The Earth is Like a Peach

The Earth is like a peach because they both have layers. The part of the peach that surronds the pit is like the earth's outer core. The pit itself is like the core of the earth. The juicy fruit of the peach represents the mantle of the earth. And last but not least, the skin of the peach is like the earth's crust. The peach does have some limitations. For example, it does not have all the layers, and sometimes peaches aren't always perfectly round. Peaches are also a different color than the Earth.
A picture of a peach:

The Earth is Like an Eye

The Earth's layers are like an eye becuase the pupil represents the core of the Earth. The iris of your eye can represent the mantle of the Earth because it is between the core and the crust. The sclera of your eye can represent the crust of the Earth's layers. But the eye does have a weakness. An example is that the sclera is the thickest part of your eye but it reperents the crust which is not the thickest layer. Another weakness is that the eye is not a sphere, but a 2 dimensional object.
A picture of an eye:

The Earth is like a Colored Pencil

The Earth is like a colored pencil. If you look at the end of it where it is not sharpened you can see three layers. The paint, the wood, and the lead. The paint represents the crust because it is the thinnest layer, and it is the very first layer. Secondly, the wood represents the mantle. That's because it is the thickest layer and it is also the second layer. Finally, the lead is an example of the core, not as thin as the crust but not as thick as the mantle. Its is also the very last layer. A colored pencil has one weakness, instead of a big round sphere, it is long and narrow. It is amazing how something as big as the Earth can measure up to something like a pencil!

The Earth is Like an Apple

The earth is like an apple because both of them have different layers. The skin represents the crust, the meat represents the mantel, and the core represents the core. One strength of this model is that it has layers. One weakness is that it doesn't have as many layers as the earth. Another weakness is that it isn't the same color as the earth. One more weakness is that it isn't nearly as big as the Earth.

external image layers.jpg

The Earth is Like an Onion

The Earth is like an onion because they both have layers. The onion may have a bit more layers than the Earth but the lines on the "crust" could represent the continental lines on the Earth's crust. The earth is also like an onion because the earth also has liquids, the deeper you slice into it. Also because the deeper you slice into it the thicker the layers get, just like the earth.

The Earth Is Like A Sponge

The earth is like a sponge, because a sponge absorbs water and so does the earth. However, they can only absorb so much water before it starts to overflow. One advantage to this model is that it absorbes as much water as it can and then starts to overflow and so does the earth. One weakness to this model is that it only has one layer. Another weakness is that it is the wrong color. One more
weakness is that it is the wrong shape.

external image sponge.jpg

The Earth Is Like A Bowl Of Cereal

The earth is like a bowl of cereal because the earth absorbes water and the cereal absorbes the milk. Weakness is that the cereal can only hold so much milk then it starts to be really soggy. Another weakness is that the cereal is not round sometimes and the earth is round.

The Earth is like an Ice Cream Bar

The earth is like a ice cream bar because the outside of the the bar is a layer and it is hard that would be the crust. The ice cream part is like the the mantle it is the thickest part too. the stick is like the core too. Though a weakness is there is no inner or outer core like there is in the earth. There isn't a lithlosphere or asthosphere. The outside of the ice cream is not cracked, so there are no tectonic plates till you bite into it. Which doesn't make this a perfect model though there is no perfect model of the earth. Some strengths are there was all the layers but the inner and outer core.

Here is an example of the earth's layers.

external image earth.jpg

The Earth Is Like A Tree

The earth is like a tree because of all the layers a tree has. As a tree gets older, it gets more layers. This is sort of like the earth because about 280 million years ago, the earth formed out of a large cloud of dust and gas that expanded and cooled to form the very base of th earth. As time grew on, the layers of the earth began to form, including the Tectonic Plates. When everything was formed, the Tectonic Plates formed Pangea about 260 million ago. Then the Teconic Plates formed the shape there is today.

The Earth is like a Cake

I siad the cake is like earth because I think it has two layers of the earth that I think are important. The two layers that I think both the cake and the earth have is the the crust and the mantle. I think the crust in the cake would be the frosting. The reason I think that is because people put a thin layer of frosting on the cake. The difference is that people don't have to put the frosting on the cake and that people make different types of cake all the time. The earth will always be the same and you cant make more of the earth.Well the type of cake my mom makes is very simple, cake then frosting. I said that the cake was the mantle because the cake is the biggest part. Without the bread there would be no cake! Same with the earth. If there was no mantle the core might burn the crust!!

The Earth is like a House

The earth is like a house because a house has an outer layer to protect the inside. It also has a bottom floor which is like the mantle because the mantle is most active and people are usually entertaining there. The mantle is very hot and the kitchen is on the bottom floor and hot food is being made. The houses middle floor is like the core because they are both in the middle. The top floor is like the outer core because it is around the mantle and on top of the inner core. The weakneses are that the earth is round and a house is not. Also a house sometimes does not have as much layers as the earth. That is the strenghts and weakneses of the earth is like a house.
